Woke up around 3am local to drive the 1.5 hours to the trailhead. Reports were that the forest service road to the trailhead had such a bad road right at the start that only vehicles with great clearance would be able to make it. This was very true. This would be the worst part of the hike getting in & out.
When i got to the trailhead it was 39 degrees. Before the sun came out it felt almost fall like. Getting up to Freel peak made me realize that i might still be adjusting to the altitude here as it felt like the amount of effort i was putting out for such a gradual grade was excessive and my heart was pounding.
The views from freel peak were worthy (lake tahoe and surrounding areas). Coming down freel peak felt like entering another planet as the next peak was like a big pile of sand. From here the hike became more of a task up until the last summit of Job’s Sister peak.
I had never done a hike that exposed me to the sort of decent that i had coming of of Job peak. It was a steep pile of sand and i tried to ski down it safely. Not sure how i feel about it. Either way it was quick and allowed me to get out of the sun.
All in all a great day out with exposure to unique conditions…
