My partner and i started this hike a bit after 530 (dont remember exactly). This hike was right outside of Bishop CA where we stayed. The starting elevation was around 9300 feet. Unlike the hike we did before the trail on this hike was of excellent quality all the way up to the base of the peak. It was a great day out, though hot; as most days are in this region. The altitude and not properly acclimating before this hike up to 13400 feet really wreaked havoc on us. The pounding headache that we both sustained did not subside until being back at 4000ish feet in Bishop for a few hours. The ascent itself was straightforward starting out with switchbacks that brought us past blue lakes. Eventually we came out in moonscape which went on for a long distance until we came to the base of the peak in a kind of canyon. The ascent to the top of the peak was not really a trail but just a scramble up boulders to the ledge of the peak. The views and drop off from the peak were stunning. Lessons were learned about the need for better methods for adjusting to the high altitude.
